Jersey City, New Jersey-
The Intercollegiate Athletic Association ("NJSIAA") today announced its Decision that Ira Guilford, a sophomore at Hoboken High School is eligible to resume playing football for the school. Yesterday, a full hearing was conducted before the NJSIAA consisting of seven members. Ira Guilford was represented by Sanford Browde of Margulies, Wind, Herrington & Knopf. Testimony was taken from representatives of Hoboken High School, including the principal and football coach, Ed Stinson, supporting the student's eligibility. In addition, John Raslowsky, principal at St. Peter's Prep, where Ira had previously attended, supported the eligibility position. Hudson Catholic High School, which had raised the challenge, claimed that Ira should not have been eligible on the basis of his previous academic record at St. Peter's Prep. Hudson Catholic had challenged his eligibility after Hoboken had defeated them 32-0.
As a result of the Decision, Duane Guilford, Ira's father, has indicated "I'm happy that this stressful situation is over and Ira will be allowed to pursue his academic and career goals in an environment which will allow Ira to grow as a person, as a student and as an athlete."
